Two questions that I am asked most…
…“What do you use to make your hair wavy?”…
…‘How come you’re always so smiley?”…
If only the answer to the second question was as simple as the first.
We are all guilty of seeing a happy smiling face and believing that the person has no cares in the world, that they must have a ‘perfect life’ more superior than ours. Of course that’s not the case.
I don’t smile because my life is ‘perfect’, of course it’s not, who’s is?
I have always been quite an optimistic person. Glass half full if you like. I believe that being happy is choice that we can make, something to work at, and to be conscious of. Happiness is high up on my priorities, because that’s what it’s all about, I think. If you’re happy, what more do you need?
I try to see the good in every day, in the people I meet, places I go. Some days it’s a lot easier than others, and of course we all have hard days, and that’s ok. Tomorrow is a new day! 🙂
It has been said that January is the ‘most depressing month of the year’. The festivities are over, we’re all a bit warn out. The days are short and cold, often making those ‘healthy resolutions’ even harder to stick to. Gahhh!!! Even the most cheerful of souls can feel a bit… “Meh?!”…
So I thought I would share with you five things that I’ll be doing this month to make sure I beat the January Blues. Simple, easy to achieve things to add to my every day to make it that little bit easier to smile!
Chase the Light
There are biological reasons for what many call ‘Winter Blues’. These are predominantly down to the lack of sunlight with long winter nights. Sunlight increases our Serotonin levels (also known as the ‘happy hormone’) and provides us with essential vitamin D.
I find it can be far less appealing to ‘get outside’ in the winter months, but making sure we do will do us the world of good. I try to go for a walk every day and soak up those rays while I can.
If you’re working, perhaps try to get some fresh air on your lunch break. Just an hour or so of day light every day could give you the boost you need.
Make it Happen
The evenings are long, and it can be all too tempting to while away the hours on the sofa in front of the screen. A few evenings of that is enough to make anyone feel blue. Instead, I plan activities that we can enjoy indoors, like cooking, crafting, even sorting through the house preparing for the beauty that is spring!
Some of my favourite winter activities to do with our boys are:
Helping to cook dinner from scratch and trying new recipes Making valentines cards, gifts and bunting
Baking for friends and neighbours
I spent many years pretty much living in Grey, White and Black. I felt that those colours were classic, elegant and safe, which of course they are. But in recent years I’ve made a conscious effort to bring a bit of colour and fun back into my wardrobe.
When White Stuff shared their January ‘Brights Du Jour’ collection with me, I felt instantly happy and excited for the new year. I have found that wearing pops of colour really does brighten up even the dullest of winter days.
In this collection, White Stuff have customised the classic Breton T and given it a playful, easy twist that you can pair back with your jeans and trainers.
The Breton’s are embellished with hearts and birds and come in vibrant shades of turquoise, yellow and gold. I love all the little details like the colourful buttons and delicate double necklines. If you’re not already a fan of brights, I would encourage you to inject a little colour into your wardrobe this year and see how it lifts your spirits!
It’s an obvious one. Yet probably the one I’m worst at, particularly this time of year. The truth is, it’s easy to reach for a refreshingly cold glass of water on a warm summers day, but I find I somehow forget to drink when it’s cold outside. Instead I make myself endless cups of headache inducing tea, coffee and hot chocolate….not good!! So this year, I’m going to make a conscious effort to drink more water. I bought myself one of those water bottles with markings on to encourage me to sip 2 litres throughout the day. I’ll add slices of fruit to it (so it tastes a bit more appealing) and try to keep it to hand at all times. I also find herbal teas can be a great way to enjoy a warm and comforting drink – minus the caffeine hit!
There’s not long left until spring pops around the corner and we can all start enjoying some warmer weather and flower covered trees again. It’s fun to use the, often quieter, months of January and February as a time to plan for the year ahead.
We book our holidays, set dates to visit friends, Col and I will even pre-plan a monthly date night. This year we have the rather exciting task of planning our wedding…EEEAK!!!
But even if you don’t have anything major planned this year yet, you can of course use the quiet time to set yourself up for a brilliant, positive and happy 2018!
Thank you so much for stopping by! I really hope these tips help you enjoy the rest of winter, and spring is just around the corner!
I’m proud to say that this post has been sponsored by lovely lifestyle brand White Stuff who kindly gifted me these outfits from the new ‘Brights du Jour’ collections.
